Welcome to the redesigned website! I've been around here in Memphis for 10 years, so I decided it was time for a little freshening up!
I'd thought I'd start out the new blog with a post that will hopefully help lots of seniors and teens (and tweens!) decide what kind of a session they might want. I specialize in senior portraits, and love to keep up with the trends and provide my clients with something unique to them. So come with your ideas. With looks you love. And bring all the clothes, accessories, shoes and props you want! We will work together at the session to create something magical, and it's always best to be over prepared!
Today I wanted to touch on a couple of the options for what time of day to schedule your portraits. I am not a big box chain that funnels you through the process and leaves you waiting in a crowded hallway for your turn on a stagnant backdrop at 2:30 in the afternoon because that's the only time that was left. There's a time and place for those photos (OK, for your yearbook pics.), but I'm not here for that! I want to know your style. I want to know your interests, talents, hobbies. . .all of it! We collaborate on choosing a location that fits all of those things and then talk about the time of day when that location sings. And most of the time we'll hit more than one spot! Today we'll look at one of my favorite combinations--The Brooks Museum and Overton Square.
Most of you are probably familiar with the term "golden hour". We as an industry have been talking it up for years!! You know the look--sunshine enveloping seniors, brides, children and families, washing everyone in warmth and all over gorgeousness. I'm a big fan! When I hit these two locations we start just before that golden hour is in full swing, capturing some clean, fresh portraits around the marble steps and backdrops. We grab a few of the sun peeking through the trees, capture a little of the gorgeous greenery surrounding the museum, and occasionally hit the Levitt Shell stage for those who have spent their years on a stage of one kind or another. This is a great location to bring an instrument, dance clothes, etc. The white marble walls lend themselves to a beautiful formal portrait. As our session progresses the light gets warmer and softer and lovelier. We usually head over to our second location about half way through golden hour so we get a some of that light at both locations.
But what comes next in my evening sessions is something fun and new! Blue Hour. Ever heard of it? Photographers like Audrey Woulard in Chicago have mastered it (really, you should look her up @kidsandthecity) . . . I have studied with her for years and am always grateful for her cutting edge workshops and tutorials. Because, just like any professional, we have to constantly be learning and stretching! And with this educational background, I have fallen in love with adding the blue hour to my sessions. Blue hour begins just as the sun is setting behind the horizon and lasts until that last little bit of light hangs in the sky. The lights of town start to filter on, and the glow is like nothing else!
So instead of going on and on, we'll let Karley's session fill in the rest. We tied in her fun and sweet personality in everything we did, and she even surprised me with a gorgeous dress from Hawaii to end the night. Loved every minute with this smiling, cheerful sweetheart!
